The History of The Irish...Worldwide

The outside of the building reminds me of the Tooreen dance hall near Ballyhaunis in County Mayo where in the late 1950s, when a stranger with cloven feet tried to entice a young lady at a dance. As they say, you can look it up.“On that chilly starlit night, a tall brooding stranger entered Tooreen dance hall, with a whiff of danger emanating from him. It wasn’t long before his prowling eyes caught the attention of young Bridget O’Flynn. When the couple took to the dance floor, heads turned. Tooreen, where cheek-to-cheek dancing was forbidden by the priests, had never witnessed this kind of lustful dancing before.“However, the stranger fled as quickly as he had arrived, leaving behind a distressed young maiden, a number of startled eye-witnesses and a dance hall with a sullied reputation. The place was thronged the following week with punters hoping to catch a glimpse of the devil’s lustful dance.
Jim they made a movie about it. Here's the trailer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qvrg4SLs3L4
That's interesting. I kinda half-believed the existence of the story when I heard it years back. The priest in charge of the dance hall was Monsignor James Horan, the man who brought the airport to Knock. (The Wolfe Tones have a song about him.) The dance hall was still there when I was in Ireland 11 years ago. It was being used for community services.
Another unusual and moving post, Belinda - thank you!
I'd seen The Ballroom of Romance a few years ago and was happy to have the opportunity to see it again. The characters are memorable and the acting is fine. Thanks so much for posting this wonderful film.
